Title A Comparison of TDMA and Synchronous CDMA for a PLC-based Multi-Machine Control System
Authority International Conference on Materials and Systems for Sustainability (ICMaSS)
Summary Reliable remote control of multiple machines is essential for energy management systems for large scale buildings and advanced future smart grids. This study uses power line communication (PLC) to exchange state information and control commands between a controller and multiple machine. In PLC, channel characteristics have cyclostationary features synchronous to the mains voltage, and its communication performance significantly differs depending on multiple access schemes. When time division multiple access (TDMA) is used in such channels, the error rate characteristic varies slot-by-slot, which adversely affects the control of each machine. Then, this inequality of communication quality results in the variance of control quality of each machine. This study thus proposes employing synchronous code division multiple access (SCDMA) and compares the control performance with the system using TDMA. As a result, it is observed that SCDMA realizes the same control quality of all the machines and improves control quality than TDMA, when the signal-to-noise ratio is enough large.
