Title Performance evaluation of a cognitive piggyback overlay system with multicarrier modulation

Summary The demand for wireless applications is increasing. However, the spectrum is a limited resource, which has been already allocated to legacy services. This manuscript focuses on spectrum sharing by multiple systems at the same time and at the same frequency. In spectrum sharing, we adopt a hierarchical access structure with primary and secondary systems. We consider a primary system that has been using the spectrum is a broadcasting system for wide areas such as the digital terrestrial television system. On the other hands, the secondary system is assumed to be a local communication system such as the Wireless LAN. The primary system communicates ignoring the secondary system. Accordingly, all the responsibility to protect the primary system from the inter-system interference falls on the secondary system. In this manuscript, we propose a cognitive overlay system in which the secondary transmitter relays the primary signal with multicarrier modulation and piggybacks its own data on it. We evaluate the symbol error rates of both the primary and the secondary systems over a stationary flat Rayleigh fading channel. As the result, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme allows the secondary signal to communicate at the high power without harming the primary system.
